New baking business offering sweet treats opens in Borders village

Tweed Bakes has opened at 33 Tweedholm Avenue East, in Walkerburn, and will provide a range of goods and snacks.

Owner and founder Jasmine Aquilina spoke with the Border Telegraph on the inspiration behind her new venture.

She said: “I always wanted to be a baker or make sweet things because my granny always made something nice to have and she taught me to bake.

“I was working in various kinds of kitchens, I was a sous chef and baking on the side.

“It encouraged me to build something for myself.”

Tweed Bakes operates out of a shed in the property’s garden and is open on Saturdays and Sundays, from 10am to 7pm.

Residents can walk up to the unit, which will be unlocked, and choose from a selection of baked goods on offer.

They will then be asked to provide payment either via bank transfer or in a money box, also found within the shed.

Hailing from a hospitality background, Ms Aquilina brings with her a wealth of experience in the food industry.

After working as a sous chef, she decided to take the plunge and try her hand at her own business.

Residents can expect the usual range of sweet treats, but Ms Aquilina did point them towards her specialty dish – a coconut lemon and lime slice.

She added: “I love experimenting with cakes and making them my own.

“I have got a lot of passion for baking. I love experimenting with flavours and doing different flavours.”

Ms Aquilina held the official opening of Tweed Bakes in April and was delighted to welcome members of the community in for the first time.

“It was amazing,” she said. “. It was such a great experience seeing people being amazed by what they found in the shed.

“Walkerburn is such a great place to live in and has such great potential.”
