I have been raising concerns about the SNP Government’s business rates revaluation process, which has left some local businesses facing significantly higher bills.
At a time when small companies are already dealing with rising costs and a challenging economic environment, this is the last thing they need.
I have asked the SNP Government to meet with me to discuss these concerns, but they have so far refused.
It seems they have more pressing priorities, even though many jobs are at stake. The government should be working with businesses to support economic growth, not making it harder for them to operate.
I will continue to press the SNP to reconsider its approach and meet with me to discuss how we can make the system fairer. Another issue I have been focusing on is the plight facing many churches.
The UK Labour government has confirmed that the Listed Places of Worship Grant Scheme, which previously provided a VAT rebate on eligible repair and conservation works, has closed.
These buildings are an important part of our local heritage and often play an important role at the heart of local communities, so I very much welcome the decision by Historic Environment Scotland to establish the Scotland’s Places of Worship Fund in response to the closure of the UK-wide scheme.
Up to £1 million will be made available during 2026-27 to help eligible listed places of worship.
Finally, as we begin a new session of the Scottish Parliament, one of my priorities will be putting food security more on the agenda of Holyrood.
Our farmers play a vital role in producing the high-quality food that we all rely upon. They also support thousands of jobs and help businesses in the wider supply chain to thrive.
Yet farmers are facing enormous pressure from rising costs, difficult weather conditions and Labour’s damaging Family Farm Tax.
Farmers need more help and far fewer obstacles put in their way.
We cannot take our food supply for granted and expect farmers to keep going even when their businesses are becoming increasingly unsustainable.
I will continue pushing both the SNP and Labour to properly support our farming sector so that our food security is protected and we can all enjoy high-quality produce for a fair price.
